Getting locked out of ChatGPT right when you need it is one of those things that’s more annoying than it should be — your password is right, the account worked fine yesterday, and now you’re just staring at an error screen. The good news is that login problems on ChatGPT are almost always fixable on your end, and most people are back in within a couple of minutes once they know what to check. Here’s what actually works, based on OpenAI’s own support docs and what other users have reported fixing it for them.
1. Check status.openai.com first
Before you touch any browser settings, take ten seconds to check status.openai.com. If there’s a wider outage or degraded performance on the login system, no amount of clearing cookies is going to help — you’ll just have to wait it out. OpenAI usually posts an update there within minutes of a known issue starting.
2. Make sure you’re signing in the same way you originally signed up
This one trips up more people than you’d think. If you created your account through Google, Microsoft, or Apple, you have to keep using that same option — logging in with email and password, or a different provider, won’t work even if it’s the same email address. If you signed up through Apple’s “Hide My Email” feature, keep in mind your account is actually tied to a private @privaterelay.appleid.com address, not your real one.
3. Clear cookies and cache for chatgpt.com specifically
Corrupted or expired session cookies are one of the most common causes of a login loop. Rather than wiping your whole browser history, go into your browser’s site settings and clear data just for chatgpt.com and openai.com. Then close the tab completely and reopen it — a plain refresh usually isn’t enough, since the old session can still be cached in memory.
4. Watch for a “Checking your browser…” loop that never finishes
If the page gets stuck on a Cloudflare verification screen that keeps looping instead of letting you through, that’s almost always a VPN, ad blocker, or an aggressive privacy extension interfering with the check. Turn off your VPN, disable extensions one at a time, and make sure JavaScript and cookies are enabled for chatgpt.com, openai.com, and auth.openai.com. This also shows up a lot on corporate or school networks that filter traffic — if that’s you, IT may need to allowlist the Cloudflare challenge.
5. Try incognito mode, or a completely different browser
This is the fastest way to isolate the problem. If ChatGPT logs you in fine in a private or incognito window, you know it’s a stuck cookie or a conflicting extension in your normal browser profile — not your account. If it still fails in incognito too, the problem is more likely server-side or specific to your account.
6. If you see a “suspicious login behavior” warning
This one’s frustrating, but it usually resolves on its own. It tends to get triggered by logging in from a new device, a new location, or a VPN that makes your login look like it’s coming from somewhere unusual. Clear your cookies, turn off any VPN, and give it up to an hour before trying again — the system needs a little time to stop flagging the session as risky.
7. Switch networks or try a different device
If none of the above has worked, the problem might not be your browser at all. Try switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or the other way around), or log in from a completely different device. This rules out router-level DNS issues or a network that’s quietly blocking part of the authentication flow — which happens more often on public or workplace Wi-Fi than most people realize.
If you’ve worked through all seven of these and you’re still locked out, it’s worth checking whether your account itself has been flagged rather than assuming it’s a technical glitch — OpenAI typically emails you if an account gets suspended or restricted, so check your inbox (including spam) before anything else. Otherwise, help.openai.com is the fastest way to get a real person looking at it.
